FROM LONDON TO MILAN: A/W ’16 TRENDS

March 25, 2016

From London’s emerging designers to Milan’s high-end luxury brands, here are the hottest street style trends that took the spotlight during A/W ’16 shows. (photo via Garconjon)

Military or Mode? The timeless military style is one of those classics in menswear as it portrays the traditional masculine look. The military look eludes dominance and edge but on the other hand, it can also be worn as a casual and relaxed look with sneakers and a jacket (preferably one with a hoodie) to be easily translated into a streetwear style for men. As a matter of fact, this look is to be worn with confidence and SWAG! Blogger’s Boyfriends loves the Rag & Bone Fall 2016 collection, showing that you don’t have to be buff or muscled up to pull off this trend whilst also featuring the military concept in accessories like men’s bags (olive coloured canvas tote), military-inspired caps, beanies and footwear such as military boots and hiking boots. The collection reveals a sleekness and chicness to streetwear with loose pants worn on the runway for a laid-back vibe, paired with well-fitted top wear. While the khaki or the olive green hues are predominately associated with the army uniform, designers for this 2016-2017 Fall/Winter season have also incorporated other natural and neutral colours in their palette! As we transition from summer to autumn, waiting for the leaves to fall and the temperature to drop, seasonal looks are also transitioning into more toned-down colours. How toned? Like earthy-toned! Camel, auburn, brown, emerald green … you get the idea!

Bold Prints or Muted Tones?  Even though the muted tones have made their comeback on the runways and Sydney street styles, it’s hard to look the other way with some eye-catching pieces that were simply bold and beautiful! Although minimalism is at its highest peak in modern fashion, seeing bold prints and colours remind us all about the more elaborate trends as the primary colour palette is the key theme for bold colours this season. It does more than capture an uplifting mood of excitement and presence – it makes a statement by taking one’s way of expression through style to the next level. A great way to balance a men’s outfit, especially one with detail and drama, is to add plain minimalistic pieces which were impeccably well-executed in Devon Halfnight Flufy’s  2016 collection.

HATS OR BACKPACKS?  Blogger’s Boyfriend is a fan of the felt fedoras and the backpack trend for that fashion-forward street style! Wearing felt fedoras was originally the norm for men in the 1920s and also happens to be the same concept Michael Jackson captured in his iconic ‘anti-gravy lean’  with his felt fedoras in the Smooth Criminal music video. While felt fedoras were commonly worn by the more mature blokes, it has become quite popular amongst the younger crowds as it adds a bit of fun and playfulness to an outfit. This new hat trend can be utilised as a seasonal staple piece in men’s wardrobes in addition to complementing the backpack trend! It has become revolutionary in men’s trends where it’s not just for women as men are becoming more comfortable flaunting this practical and contemporary item. The black leather backpack, in particular, is a luxury, modern, chic, and classic article in menswear. Navy OR Blue?  Navy won’t be going anytime soon and might as well be crowned as the ultimate all-year-round colour! The pilot and navy theme was a major highlight from the high-end designer runways and can be altered for those who want something contemporary as it is classic! It’s hands down an elegant and functional choice for both men (and women) in formal wear, meaning just about anyone can pull it off. As these timeless shades are a popular choice, particularly with men, navy and blue are commonly represented by those who emobdy authority or power so, they are the perfect colours to wear to a corporate event. While it can depict dominance, blue hues are also very romantic and calming, so it can be worn for an appealing and flirty flair. Many runway shows adopted a navy-on-navy look which further emphasises chicness and modernity. (image source: Tommy Ton’s best dress street style via vogue.com)

SILHOUETTES  Whilst hats and backpacks made their debut on the runways, Blogger’s Boyfriend will give you the final verdict on the biggest highlight during Fashion Week A/W ’16- coats with belts! Yes, you’re welcome! So okay, this one was probably a given but let’s talk about silhouettes anyway because Blogger’s Boyfriend loves to ‘cover it!’ Any man with style and taste will be wearing a silhouette this Fall/Winter, not just because it’s getting colder but because it will become the fundamental feature of their fashionable ensemble as it literally adds a layer of sophistication. Evidently, Paris and London’s runways showcased fine-tailored coats and jackets in both high-end and streetwear looks. Other silhouettes had similar touches of grace and masculine elegance, like suits with scarves around the neck.  The main silhouette fabrics spotted were suede, cashmere, wool, denim, leather, and silk.

What did you think of  Autumn/Winter ’16 trends? What’s your favourite trend or highlight?

Can’t wait to see what you have to say!

Miguel Arnau and Markus Ebner from New York’s Fall 2016 Men’s Shows via vogue.com: There are many ways to rock classic pieces during fashion weeks and to make them interesting combos such as coats and scarves, leather pouches and vintage boots. A light-weighted cotton or cashmere belted coat is perfect for multi-layerings, shop such coats like Burberry, Vintage Yves Saint Laurent, Dries Van Noten, APC and Comme Des Garcons. A rich-coloured tan leather documents holder, smooth or soft wrinkled, can always brighten up a dull winter outfit. Designers at Fashion Week such as APC and  Atelier de l’Armée.
